Killahevlin is one of Front Royal’s most well-known historic homes.
The home was built in 1905 for William E. Carson. William married Agnes Holladay McCarthy in 1906, and referred to the house as “Killahevlin,” after the place where a childhood friend of William’s lived.
Killahevlin is a Queen Anne-style brick home. Designed by the Washington, D.C architectural firm A. B. Mullett & Co, it is 2 ½ stories high.
William was best known for his role as president of the Riverton Lime Company, although he was recognized for more than that. He helped establish Virginia’s state park system. William also helped create Shenandoah National Park and our local Skyline Drive. He supported Virginia's highway marker program, and alas, he served on Virginia’s Democratic State Central Committee.
To honor their only son, the Carisons donated 63 acres to create what is now the Front Royal Golf Club.
In 1993, Killahevlin was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It includes historical structures such as the guesthouse, water tower, and gazebos. Today, Killahevlin remains an important piece of Front Royal’s history!
